Note:
Founder of Benedictine monasticism. Perhaps he and Augustine of Hippo were the main forces in Western Christianity from their lifetimes until Bernard of Clairvaux and the rise of the Dominican and Franciscan orders in the thirteenth century. Sometimes depicted a bearded man dressed in a robe and hooded cape with a black scapular, holding a crozier and a book.
