Artist statement: Growing up, there were two things I was always drawn to: nature and art. From the moment I photographed with my aunt’s DSLR at eight years old, I was hooked. Over the past eight years I have photographed nearly every subject imaginable, but I have always felt an innate passion to connect with nature through my art. After attempting to capture the most expansive landscapes, I realized that my true passion lies in detailed, textured close-ups. This epiphany serendipitously came to me during Denver’s most brutal winter months, in which nearly all plant life is either dead or dormant – so I took the opportunity to highlight that season and ran with it. There is a certain attractiveness to death that simply cannot be found in the bright and blooming. Although most wouldn’t bother giving a withering leaf or drooping petal a second glance, I take the time to highlight every wrinkle and blemish, utilizing my images as both a memento mori and as a showcase of nature’s mesmerizing cycles of death and rebirth. Each one of my photographs is paired with an augmented reality animation, breathing new life into the still or dormant flora that they focus on. By adding this interactive element, I am essentially asking viewers to take part in the exhibition, allowing them to fully engage with and absorb themselves in every piece. The animations vary in terms of subject matter, with some of them recreating realistic movements of plants swaying in a breeze, and others mutating into psychedelic effects that completely transform the image. By combining my photography with AR technology, I can completely immerse viewers and allow them to appreciate the quiet beauty that can be found in any phase of nature.
