"On October 6, starting at 4:30 p.m. on the Quad in front of the Student Center, Regis hosted *A Vigil for Indigenous Children: Remembrance, Lament, and Hope for Healing*. The gathering was in response to recent discoveries of unmarked graves of Indigenous children at the sites of several former boarding schools in Canada, as well as the tragic loss of human life and culture that took place at such schools, both in Canada and the United States. Some of these schools were Catholic. Some of them were run by the Jesuits. We all stand in sorrow before the tragic loss of life and the way indigenous children were torn away from their families to be stripped of their language and culture.
In anticipation for that Vigil gathering, an installation was created on campus in remembrance of these children. This installation included an orange flag display on the Quad, as well as numerous children’s shoes on display in the library to represent the tens of thousands of children and families who were affected.
Members of the Regis community were invited to donate new or used children’s shoes for this installation. All shoes donated were then, in turn, donated to children in local indigenous communities once the installation was taken down.
Video captured by Sean Gruno of Regis University Library."
